Shying Away From Long-Tail Keyword Phrases? You Might Want To Reconsider That. Check this out!   by Shawn Grant

Keywords are a basic part of search engine optimization. Keywords are the words users input in to marjor search engines to find applicable businesses. Cataloging the correct keywords is an important starting point for any SEO initiative. Don't over look long-tail keywords!

Competition for sought after keywords is tough. As a result, no matter how good your SEO is, it can be extremely difficult to secure first page ranking if you target popular keywords. The bottom line is, if your site does not rank on the first page, then you are not going to get high volumes of traffic from online marketing. One option is to go after longer keyword phrases.

Longer keywords are strings of three or more words that online users may be using when looking for your product, while short-tail keywords are made up of only one or two words. "Ladies coats" is quite competitive example of a shorter keyword. Trying to get on to the first page of Google's search results for this keyword is incredibly hard. However, a longer phrase, such as "womens warm winter coats" will attract less competition from other businesses and will be much easier to increase your online ranking.

Due to the fact that competition for longer keywords is less intense, it is rather easy to get your website to rank high on the first page of search engine results when online users conduct searches using your longer phrases. The one downside of longer phrases is that fewer users will be inputing these terms, which can have an impact on the number of visitors to your site.

Smaller numbers of visitors are balanced by the fact that online retailers often find that they achieve higher rates of conversion when users visit the site following an online search using long-tail keywords. This may be because the online visitor has specific needs that are reflected by the use of the long-tail keyword. Users who have used a longer search term may also be further on in the buying cycle, making them much more likely to convert into a customer when they arrive at your website.

Longer keywords are sometimes looked upon as the poor cousins of short-tail keywords because they bring lower volumes of traffic, in theory. Although, in practice, if a short-tail keyword lands your site on page 50 of the search results, your SEO efforts are in vain.

It is worth experimenting with keyword phrase combinations to find out which are best for your website. You may find that it is more valuable to attract 200 web visitors using long-tail keywords if 10% of the visits lead to conversion. This is a far better result than driving 1,000 visitors with a short-tail keyword with a conversion rate of 1%.

Search engine optimization of longer keywords is also very important. On-page optimization of longer keywords has been found to boost the ranking of a website by six places in the search engine results in an internet study conducted in Dec 2011. The study demonstrated that longer phrases were 2.5 times better at converting visitors into customers than short-tail keywords. This demonstrates that longer keywords have a huge amount of potential that has not yet been fully exploited by most.

When it comes to search engine optimization, the key to securing high search engine ranking remains the creation of unique content. This will help you drive a high volume of visitors. Longer phrase may be a little more difficult to work into your content without having them look odd. However, with some care, you can work them seamlessly into your SEO program.
