How To Do Correct KEYWORD Selection
The first thing you need to do when you start your keyword selection is make sure you know your searchers. That is the best website advice that you can get. The biggest thing to consider is, are we looking to go for something with the most number of searches? The most number of searches doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the keyword we want to be going after. You need to become familiar with buying phrases versus browsing phrases. If someone’s on Google and they’re typing in camera, they’re more of a browser. They don’t know what it is they want yet. They’re just doing a little bit of initial research to find it out.
When you compare that to someone who's looking for example, the Sony Handycam hdrs11, once they have typed in that, they have pretty much obviously raised their hand in Google and announced, this is what I am trying to find. Those type of keywords. Although you'll get a lot less competition on those and you'll get a lot less searches, they can actually pay off. They are the ones that are the purchasing phrases and they will convert at a far higher rate.
Whenever we do any form of optimization both on page and brooding about the destination page, I always like to put myself in the shoes of the individual doing the search. So I think that may be a very smart way to contemplate things, where you say, if somebody is typing this keyword into Google, imagine yourself sitting in their body, imagine yourself thinking what they were thinking and what is it that they are attempting to find? Fundamentally you want to meet them at the point they're already in their mind. It is like you need to join the conversation that is already in their head. They are chatting when they are typing something in and you need to make sure that you meet them at that point.
Site structure and the way we actually choose these keywords is important. This is the way that we structure a site. Let’s say we have a new client who is coming on board who we are about to work with. The first thing that we do is, we build a big list of keywords. We look at what the competition is doing, we find out as much as we can. You’re looking to build a big list of keywords and then what we do is we take those keywords and we build a structure.
There are 3 tiers. The first tier is just going to be your primary cash phrase. Your 2nd tier, these are far more almost like category pages. An example is the store Planet thirteen. Let's say the primary money phrase for Planet 13 is band product. That is a wider term. Typically talking when I am going for those first tier, it is like, if you had a magic wand and you'd rank it, what word would that be? That is going to be that term.
The second tier sometimes can be more competitive or less competitive than the money phrase. For this money phrase I try to do an analysis in my head. It’s a little bit of an art and science when it comes to keyword selection. I try to think about the most amount of traffic I can get that is also going to be quite highly targeted. Someone typing in band merchandise is looking for music related things. So if I can provide them with that, then that is a good phrase there.
The category pages can be similar phrases, but at least on Planet 13, they're more classes, stuff like band t-shirts, band stickers, band patches, they're more like classes.
The third tier is where you break out and this is where you have long tail phrases. Here is where you have got the full product name. That could be Metallica black t-shirt or something like that. That is the structure.
SEO really is a game of lasers as noted in a Leslie Rohde interview. He knows his S.E.O material. He talks about the idea of S.E.O as very much targeted [*T]. Each word that we are going after, you are actually just going after that one phrase. It is not like we are shining a flashlight and we're going to pick up all these different phrases.
Each page that we create is very much just a little laser target that we are going after. That's partly why huge sites win, because they have got so many targets out there.
Imagine that every page that you create is a ticket in the search site lottery. The more tickets you have, the greater chance you have of winning the search website lottery and getting a client to come and visit your website. The more pages the better. These are the advantages when you do your keyword selection the best way. A Market Samurai review will teach you the proper ways of selecting your keywords.
